Kalymnos,
Undiscovered

Rock walls rising from turquoise sea. Tavernas at the water's edge. The ferry to Telendos at golden hour. This is the Greece you were looking for.

A Greek island that still surprises

Kalymnos sits quietly between Kos and Leros, known to rock climbers the world over but still off the radar for most travellers. That's its magic. The roads are narrow, the food is honest, and the light is extraordinary.

The island's main village of Myrties faces Telendos, a dramatic almost uninhabited island silhouette that turns pink at dusk. The ferry crossing takes only ten minutes. No cars & no scooters. Just peace and quiteness.

Getting here

How to reach Kalymnos

Fly into Kos (KGS) — it's the closest airport with good connections from Athens, London, and much of northern Europe. Important: don't go to Kos Town — head straight to Mastichari on the other side of the island, where the ferry to Kalymnos takes just 25 minutes. Most first-time visitors make this mistake. There are also direct ferries from Piraeus (Athens) that take you overnight — one of the classic Greek island journeys. Myrties is on the west coast, about 8 km from the port.

When to come

Kalymnos has two distinct seasons. Spring and autumn (April–June, September–November) are paradise for climbers and hikers — mild, clear, uncrowded (in Spring). Summer is hot and lively, with the beaches and tavernas in full swing. Autumn is also busy but mild, and the island is still beautiful — just bring a jacket for the evenings. Peak climbing season is September to October.

Getting around

Life without a car

You don't strictly need a car if you're staying in Myrties. The beach, the Telendos ferry, supermarkets, and a handful of excellent tavernas are all walkable. There's a local bus between the main settlements, and taxis are cheap. A scooter or small hire car opens up the rest of the island — the mountain road to Emborio is one of the most dramatic drives in the Aegean.
